Covid 19 travel restrictions in Iran

 Conditions for entry and exit of compatriots and foreign nationals to the Islamic Republic of Iran during the period of the Covid-19 outbreak

In order to curb and control the spread of the Coronavirus, the following conditions now apply to the entry and exit of Iranian compatriots and foreign nationals until further notice.

It is essential that people who intend to travel to the Islamic Republic of Iran fully adhere to the following conditions.

1. Iranians planning to return to Iran whose duration of stay abroad at the time of arrival is more than two weeks will require a health certificate stating that they have tested negative for Covid-19. This health certificate must be in English. If the health certificate is in the language of the country of origin, i.e. not English, it has to be authenticated by a consular or other relevant political authority. If there are justifiable reasons that it is not possible for someone to obtain a PCR test, and this fact has been confirmed by the Iranian consular or political authorities in the country of origin, airlines may conditionally accept these passengers. However, as soon as they arrive in Iran and without regard to clinical signs, a Covid-19 test will be administered. It is also mandatory to provide a written undertaking to undergo home quarantine until the test results are received. Obviously, if the test is positive or the symptoms return, the duration of home quarantine must be increased to 14 days. The cost of testing and possible quarantine is borne by the passenger.

2. Foreign nationals planning to travel to Iran will require a health certificate in English stating that they have tested negative for Covid-19(PCR). If the health certificate is in the language of the country of origin, i.e. not English, it has to be authenticated by a consular or other relevant political authority. If no health certificate is provided upon arrival, these passengers will be returned to the country of origin on the next available flight. Please be advised that health certificates are no longer valid if issued more than 96 hours prior to passengers’ arrival in Iran. If, at the time of arrival, the validity period of the issued certificate (96 hours) has expired due to the duration of the trip or for other reasons, there is no need to retake the test. Passengers will only be retested if it is considered necessary after screening and clinical evaluations at the time of arrival. If testing for Covid-19 is required upon arrival, passengers will have to undergo quarantine until the test results have been received. If the test is positive, they must be housed in designated quarantined accommodation for a maximum of 14 days. All accommodation and re-testing costs will be borne by the passenger.

3. All passengers arriving into Iran (both Iranian and foreign nationals) will undergo screening. If any passenger is symptomatic and at the discretion of health professionals they will be referred to designated medical and diagnostic centers and there will be a follow-up 14 days after arrival.

4. All passengers applying to enter the country must complete the self-declaration form which they will receive from the airline before or during the flight. They will submit this completed form to the airline which is obliged to provide the list of flight passengers and self-declaration forms upon request at border/airport health care bases.

5. All applicants departing from the country must be clinically evaluated by a physician and health care provider in one of the comprehensive health service centers or at the airport/border. At the request of the destination country or traveler, a health certificate will be issued.

6. In countries where the health certificate is not issued in English, it is necessary that it bears the seal of "health status" verifying "the correctness of the issuance of the health certificate and the absence of disease” in Persian or English. It also needs to be verified by the Iranian consular or other relevant political authority.

In the case of diplomats, political delegations and staff from international agencies (and based upon reciprocity) it is not necessary to present a health certificate from the country of origin. It is only necessary to undergo clinical evaluation upon arrival. If any person is found to be symptomatic during this evaluation, a Covid-19 test will be performed and that person will need to provide a contact number and sign a letter of commitment declaring that they will stay at a designated place of residence until the test result has been received.
